A race is more than just a race. This past weekend, both the World Superbike and MotoAmerica motorcycle road racing series came to one of the most fabled tracks in America, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The racing was exciting, yet the crowd was not nearly as big as you would think. Maybe it was... 

Five years ago, I watched Casey Stoner drive hard out of Turn 11 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, pull alongside MotoGP race leader Jorge Lorenzo as they crested turn one—the fastest section of the rolling, 2.238-mile racetrack—complete a daring pass on the reigning world champion going into turn... 

Jonathan Rea's quickest lap in part 1 of red-flag-riddled race 2 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was 1:24.299, more than half a second slower than the fastest lap of the race up to that point set by race-1-winner Marco Melandri. But the Italian crashed out of the second restart, as did blisteringly... 

No one can deny the special place that Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca holds in the international racing world. The fans like the track because of the multiple viewing positions – many of which are quite close the the action. And that's before we even consider the five story drop of the Corkscrew....
